The smelting of carbon steel is usually carried out in converter and open hearth furnace. Bof generally smelting ordinary carbon steel, and open furnace can smelting all kinds of high quality steel. Oxygen top blown bof steelmaking technology develops rapidly and has a tendency to replace open hearth steelmaking. The refined liquid steel is injected into the ingot mold and various ingot are obtained. After forging or rolling, the ingot is processed into steel plates, strips, bars and sections of various shapes. Carbon steel is usually used directly under hot rolling condition. Low-carbon steel

High-carbon steel
Approximately 0.6 to 1.0% carbon content.
Very strong, used for springs, edged tools, and high-strength wires.

Ultra-high-carbon steel
Approximately 1.25-2.0% carbon content. Steels that can be tempered to great hardness.
Used for special purposes like (non-industrial-purpose) knives, axles, and punches.
Most steels with more than 2.5% carbon content are made using powder metallurgy.
